You and the health system
Can't find what you're looking for?
You should go first to your doctor about any health concerns (apart from most things to do with your teeth, or your eyesight) including common mental health issues.
Your doctor can give you information, prescribe medication, and refer you to specialist services. Some other services, including practice nurses, and Primary Care Mental Health Workers (who can give you counselling) may also work with your doctor. All these services come under Leeds Primary Care Trust.
If you need treatment that cannot be done at your doctor’s surgery, including most operations, or for serious conditions such as heart disease and cancer, you will be referred to services run by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, many of which are at Leeds General Infirmary or St James Hospital.
If you need specialised mental health or learning disabilities services you may be referred to Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust.
If you have concerns, including any age discrimination, about services you can talk to PALS.
All of the above services are part of the NHS. There are also private health services.
