What is social networking?

Social networking involves grouping lots of individuals together to form an online community so they can share experiences, photos and even form friendships. The benefits for you include; forming new friendships, staying in touch with family members and maybe hearing about local events – all of which can help you feel less lonely. Be a little cautious when speaking to people online as they may not be who they say they are – but don’t let this hold you back in discovering a whole new and exciting world.

What is a blog?

Blog is a contraction of ‘web log’ and they are like a diary with regular updates of commentary or descriptions of events. Sometimes they might be video clips instead of written information.

What sort of things will I find blogs about?

It might be someone describing their experiences, for example learning to use computers and the internet, or living with a particular health condition. It could also be a diary of an event. Or it might also be a professional describing their job, or a particular piece of work they are doing.

With each blog, other people can comment on what they have read.

What is a discussion or forum?

A discussion, or forum is a space where lots of people can contribute to the discussion of a topic.

What sort of discussions will there be?

Whatever you like!  It might be discussions of certain initiatives or consultations that are going on, or reminiscing about life in Leeds. It could be about problems you are having with something, such as your computer or people’s experiences of using a particular service.

It’s worth remembering that whatever you post can be seen by everybody – so do think carefully about what you write.
