Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006

Can't find what you're looking for?

This law provides protection against age discrimination in most aspects of employment such as applying for a job, being considered for training or promotion, being made redundant and being dismissed. It also covers all training and education which gives you skills relevant to work.

However, an employer can still refuse to consider you for a job over the age of 65 without having to justify it, and you will have no way of challenging or appealing against the decision.

It is generally unlawful for employers to use age as a factor when selecting people for redundancy. If you are an employee over the age of 65 you can challenge for unfair dismissal, you have the right to request to carry on working, and you are entitled to statutory sick pay in the same way as other employees. Harassment or bullying at work, based on your age, is unlawful.

It is important for you to get detailed advice if you feel you may be discriminated against because of your age in employment.
