If you need a wheelchair on a long term basis your GP can refer you to the Wheelchair Centre at Chapel Allerton Hospital. You can be assessed for the most suitable wheelchair from the NHS range. You can get Free ambulance transport to and from the centre.
If you need a wheelchair for less than 12 weeks your GP can refer you to the Leeds Equipment Store, or you can contact DIAL on 0113 214 3630.
If you want to buy your own wheelchair, get independent advice first. The William Merritt Disabled Living Centre is the best place to go. Tel 0113 305 5332 to make an appointment.
Wheelchairs are now available in many supermarkets and you can loan electric scooters from Shopmobility. Many local attractions now have wheelchairs or scooters for loan, including Lotherton Hall, Chevin Forest Park, Golden Acre Park, Temple Newsham Park and Tropical World. It is often necessary to book in advance: phone the attraction directly.
As a wheelchair user you have rights under the Disability Discrimination Act.
