Around 70% of women and men between the age of 50 and State Retirement age are in employment (at Spring 2004). For many older people of that age, being in work is a very important way of keeping active and keeping social contacts, as well as having an income. However, only one in ten women over 60, and less than one in 12 men over 65, are in employment.

There is now a certain amount of protection against age discrimination through the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006.

More employers now recognise the value of employing older people, with the skills and experience they bring. There are now agencies specially to help older people get jobs.
