Respite care

Respite care means giving a break to someone usually looked after in their own home. It may be a short stay (usually one or two weeks) in a care home or care home with nursing or somewhere else, for example using the Family Placement Scheme. Hospitals occasionally provide respite care. This can be part of a regular programme or a one-off. An assessment has to be done before respite care can be arranged.
Family placement is home-based day or overnight respite care. There are also schemes giving short breaks in a Family Placement carer’s home.
