Both cost and lack of accessible transport for disabled people can be major barriers and can lead to isolation and loneliness. It’s important to know about ways of travelling free, discounts, and whether transport is accessible.
All older people (aged 60+) and disabled people can get free off-peak local bus travel anywhere in England with the English National Concessionary Pass. You may qualify for the Disabled Person’s Railcard. The Railcard allows you - and an adult companion with you - to get 1/3 off most train fares throughout the UK. You can also get up to 50% discount on National Express coach travel.
Facilities at all bus and train stations and airports have to be accessible for disabled people under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). All new buses and trains also have to be accessible. Air travel must also be accessible, under European law.
